Opinion As A 1B Business Apple Music Appears To Be Off To An Impressive Start

The big question mark over Apple Music has been how many customers would choose to try it out, and – crucially – how many of them would be willing to pay for the service once the free trial ended. Tim Cook answered both questions yesterday, revealing that the service currently has 15M subscribers, of whom 6.5M are paying customers. There are still plenty of unknowns, of course. We don’t know the exact split between individual and family subscriptions (though family subs were around 18% back in August), and we don’t know how subscribers map out across the countries – both of which we’d need to know to accurately calculate how much Apple is earning from the service....

Parks Rec S Original Title Why It Was Changed

Parks & Recreation’s original title was simple but probably wouldn’t have caught your attention at all – and, surprisingly, that’s not the reason why it was changed. Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, the political satire sitcom Parks & Recreation debuted on NBC in 2009, and even though the first season wasn’t the best, it continued its course for six more seasons, ending in 2015. The series followed the lives (both in and outside the office) of Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and her friends and co-workers from the Parks Department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana....

While there are plenty of augmented reality apps that highlight nearby points of interest overlaid over live video feed, this feature is still non-existent in iOS Maps app. But a number of mapping-related patents and quiet acquisitions of startups focused on mapping tech indicate that Apple has been quietly working on taking the mapping experience on iOS devices to the next level. The latest patent application Apple filed with the United States Trademark and Patent Office is the best example of that....

Opinion It S Long Past Time For Apple To Fix Its Three Biggest Icloud Problems

My colleague Bradley Chambers recently wrote that his single biggest disappointment with WWDC was that Apple made no move to announce an upgrade to the 5GB free iCloud tier. One of our readers, Sahil Malik, made a wry comment on the $6,699 maximum cost of the new MacBook Pro: As his comment implies, the 5GB free tier is now nothing less than an embarrassment … An embarrassment because, as Bradley wrote, it looks hopelessly out of touch with today’s world....

Opinion It S Time To Consign Passwords To History And Apple Should Take The Lead

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: passwords are a horribly outdated and clunky approach to security, and it’s time to consign them to history. That view has been underlined by the Federal Trade Commission’s chief technologist Lorrie Cranor, who this week told a security conference that official government advice to change passwords regularly can actually make things worse. Her argument is based on something I’ve not only seen myself, but done myself – when I worked for a large company which required monthly password changes....
